Who

Richard Davis

Co-Owner/Artistic Director/Board Member

Richard established what he calls a house of ideas at the Browncoat, the downtown nonprofit theater he founded in 2007 with his wife, Amber. Its a haven for emerging playwrites, actors and designers. Though Richards long been involved in the Wilmington theatre scene, he says his first love was baseball, and he once aspired to play for the Atlanta Braves. The most important thing he learned from baseball, he says, is its OK to fail. One action wont define your entire life; theres always another at bat, so go for it.

What

Opened in 2008, The Browncoat Pub & Theatre is a strange hybrid. While we are first and foremost a theatrical venue, we are also a geeky bar. Not only do we produce multiple plays a year, but we have nightly karaoke, the Camp-B Movie film club, screenings of shows such as Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones, and a variety of other forms of entertainment, such as magicians and mentalists, comedians, art shows, and the Cape Fear Film Festival. But at the root of it all, we can be summed up to be a place where people can meet and share ideas, pursue artistic endeavors, enjoy quality entertainment, and not feel constrained by the "traditional" bar atmosphere.

Theatre

Established in 2007 by Richard and Amber Davis, Guerilla Theatre started out first as a small blackbox under what was once the Soapbox Laundro-Lounge. The following year, it moved into the space in historic downtown Wilmington that is the Browncoat Pub and Theatre, where it has put on full seasons of theatre ever since. The mission of the theatre is to encourage and promote local, emerging talent, from new actors to brand new plays. The vast majority of work on our stage is original, including several pieces by the late Leonard Melfi, and we have debuted several actors and directors to Wilmington's vibrant theatre community. We are also proud that we are the most nominated and awarded straight theatre company in the Greater Wilmington Area at the annual StarNews Theatre Awards.

Interested in acting opprotunities? Check our Facebook and Twitter feeds for the audition information, as well as Encore Magazine.

Want us to perform something you've written? Email a synopsis and your completed stageplay to contact@browncoattheatre.com, and we will review it.

Bar

We are a geek bar, plain and simple. When first walk in, you see the CIC tables from Battlestar Galactica to your left, and the TARDIS directly in the back of the bar. The karaoke booth is a steampunk machination, and the bar itself is some strange amalgamation of Victorian library and a spaceship engine. Both the bar top and bathrooms are Wilmington's most literate, covered in comic book excerpts, and our drink menu is quite literally out of this world, with drink such as a "Sonic Screwdriver" and "Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster". And once you've had that Gargle Blaster, you'll be ready to get up on our stage under real theatrical lights and sing your favorite songs across our theatrical sound system during our 7-days-a-week Karaoke, starting nightly at 10pm.

Perhaps most impressive, though, is that we are completely non-profit, even down to our bartenders proudly being volunteers. The Browncoat is probably the only place in North Carolina where your beer dollars go directly to funding the next great show that goes up on our stage.
